If you've visited me in clinic before, you'll know I love educating my patients just as much as treating them.
One of the best parts of my job is helping people understand why their skin is behaving the way it is. Sometimes, a few simple changes can make a bigger difference than any treatment.
Every week, I see the same mistakes being made, not because people don't care about their skin, but because there's so much conflicting advice online.
So, I thought I'd share the five biggest skin mistakes I see every week in clinic.
1. Not wearing SPF every single day
If I could only recommend one skincare product, it would be a broad-spectrum SPF.
Many people think sunscreen is only needed on holiday or during the summer, but UV rays are present all year round... even on cloudy Yorkshire days.
Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of premature skin ageing, pigmentation and collagen breakdown.
Wearing SPF every morning is one of the simple and most effective things you can do to protect your skin for the future.
2. Buying skincare because it's trending
Social media has made skincare more popular than ever, which is fantastic but it has also made it incredibly confusing.
Every week there's a new "must-have" product or miracle ingredient.
The reality is that skincare isn't one size fits all.
What works brilliantly for one person could irritate someone else's skin or do absolutely nothing.
Healthy skin starts with understanding your skin type and choosing products that are right for you, not simply what's popular online.
3. Using too many active ingredients
This is something I'm seeing more and more.
Retinol, exfoliating acids and vitamin C are all fantastic ingredients when used correctly.
The problem is many people are layering several powerful products together without realising they're damaging their skin barrier!
When that happens, skin often becomes red, dry, sensitive or starts breaking out.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is simplify your routine rather than add another product.
4. Expecting one treatment to solve everything
There isn't a single treatment that fixes every skin concern.
Healthy, glowing skin is usually achieved through a combination of good skincare, healthy habits and, where appropriate, professional treatments.
In clinic, I always explain that the best results come from having a personalised plan rather than chasing the latest trend.
Small improvements over time nearly always produce better, more natural-looking results than trying to change everything at once.
5. Waiting until you're unhappy before asking for advice
This is probably the biggest one.
So many people tell me they've been thinking about booking a consultation for months or even years... but kept putting it off.
A consultation isn't about committing to treatment.
It's about understanding your skin, discussing your concerns and finding out what your options are.
Sometimes all someone needs is reassurance and a simple skincare routine.
Sometimes we identify an underlying skin condition that needs treating.
And sometimes we create a treatment plan together.
There is never any pressure.
My advice?
Your skin is unique.
It changes with age, hormones, stress, sleep, lifestyle and even the seasons.
That's why I don't believe in copy and paste treatment plans.
Every patient we see at Amethyst Clinic in Bingley receives an individual assessment because no two faces and no two skin journeys are the same.
Whether your concern is redness, pigmentation, acne, ageing skin or simply wanting to feel more confident without makeup, the first step is always understanding what's happening beneath the surface.
Looking after your skin isn't about striving for perfection.
It's about keeping it healthy, protecting it for the future and feeling confident in your own skin.
Thank you for taking the time to read this blog. My aim is to share honest, evidence based advice that helps you make informed decisions about your skin, without the jargon or the pressure.
If there's a topic you'd like me to cover in a future blog, I'd genuinely love to hear from you.
You will hear from me again soon!
